the background
Shaw Contract is a company with 750 employees that designs and manufactures flooring products for spaces where people work, learn, and gather in the commercial market. Their products include carpet, hardwood, and resilient materials, and are intended to combine design elements, sustainability, and performance.
the problem
Shaw Contract wanted to launch a new AI driven tool that supports their interior designer users by curating products from their massive catalog into relevant sets that coordinate with the user’s inspiration.
Above is a reference image from the project owner for the brief.
the solution
I, along with 2 other UX/UI designers created a powerful and scalable web app design that was intuitive to use and extremely flexible. With a 3 week time restraint, we were focused on fine-tuning the experience around product finding, the moodboard builder, mobile experience and integrating the experience seamlessly with Shaw Contract’s profile functionality.
discover
Due to the time constraints, we focused on sme interviews and competitive research.
2. define
We combined our insights into a set business requirements and an outline including opportunity areas. Our key takeaways were:
The tool would need to tie into the current Shaw Contract functionality so users could easily favorite or purchase samples through the experience.
Product finding needed to be simple and incorporate a multistep filter to allow the user to find what they wanted more easily
The moodboard builder needs to be flexible with the ability to replace off-site tools and have the ability to share with other users and export with annotations of the products.

Inputting Inspiration
The initial introduction to the tool has a landing page with 3 ways to input inspiration. We designed these pages to be consistent and easy to use. We also built a tutorial for new users to guide them through the process.
The user can choose any type of inspiration they want.
Uploading images also comes with the ability to use AI prompts to enhance your results.
Inspiration via picking color.
Inspiration Dashboard
The dashboard is centered around the moodboard which we call the “Palette”. The palette has a comprehensive set of tools, utilizing contextual menus, with the ability to move assets around, change the asset image type, change the elevation of the asset and much more. This tool is set up to allow the user to create and modify a full moodboard with everything they need that is client-ready without leaving the tool.
Inspiration dashboard that shows AI driven results from the user's inspiration.
Asset Panel
The Assets Panel delineates between assets active in the palette and 3 AI-driven product groups that they can switch back and forth from. There are multiple views of this palette to account for the user intent, if they value product names and data or the visual more.
Asset Panel shows Shaw Contract products that can be added to the pallete.
The asset panel has different ways to view the assets depending on what is important to the user.
Asset Types
From the dashboard, the user has the ability to choose sets of products to add to the palette, they can change views to prioritize product finding, they can share, save, add samples of the active products to cart and more.
Adding products uses a contextual filter to narrow down products quickly. This is v1 of the design.
Adding Products
Lastly, the user can adjust the views of the palettes to account for the way they want to work. They can even set up a custom view. The options are reduced but still available for mobile.
This view allows users to see their initial inspiration images and a larger asset panel.
View options are also available for other devices. The default version uses a card like swipe function but has the ability to also stack the modules.
deliver
We are in the process of performing UAT currently and the tool is expected to launch in Q3 of 2024. We plan to iterate quickly after launch as we have several features that didn’t make it into mvp.
